I teach in Sedona once a year.  On this dull autumn day, I was painting with my pal Ed along the Upper Wash. What appealed to me was the continuity between the spot I was standing and the rock massif a mile or so away. It wasn’t a path so much as a series of planes connecting me to that giant rock. The creosote bushes, trees and shrubs next to me stretched for miles across the high desert, and then, suddenly, there was this absurd rock sticking hundreds of feet into the air. Well, that’s Sedona!
