St. Swithin’s day, if thou dost rain, for forty days it will remain.
St. Swithin’s day, if thou be fair, for forty days, ’twill rain no more.

I painted this on St. Swithin’s Day, a dusty dry morning in Camden. Judging from the subsequent weather, the legend of St. Swithin’s Day must be true. More likely, that just reflects meteorological reality.

While a single day cannot magically lock in 40 days of weather, mid-July is a critical meteorological turning point for the Northern Hemisphere. During this time, the polar jet stream slows down and settles into a stable summer track that often dictates weather patterns.

That’s Mt. Battie peeking through the lush summer foliage behind this fence.
