Santa Claus

Santa Claus was a gift from my dear friend Judie, who was baffled about why he had a blonde beard.

“He’s an old man,” I told her. “He doesn’t know about blueing for white hair.” But Judie felt he would be happier at my house. He’s lived with me for about twenty years now, and we’re best buds.

I was raised without Santa. Perhaps that’s why I get such a kick out of him now. He may not be ‘real’ in the way literal-thinkers put it, but he’s a symbol for generosity, love, and kindness. We can always use more of those things.
