How do you look into the shadows and find rich, nuanced color? And how do you make a streetlight or a slice of moonlight actually appear to glow? In this focused, three-week session, we’re going to demystify the night scene.

We’ll focus on:

Session 1: Understanding the Nocturne – Value, Color, and Light
·      What makes a nocturne different?
·      Night color is not black
·      Simplifying the scene
Session 2: Painting Light at Night – Technique and Atmosphere
·      Establishing the darks
·      Handling artificial light, like streetlights, windows, headlights and illuminated signs
·      Brushwork and edges
Session 3: Advanced Nocturnes – Color Harmony and Mood
·      Choosing a color key
·      Creating depth at night
·      Finishing techniques
