Sedona Plein Air Festival paintings

I finished the 2025 Sedona Plein Air Festival with eight paintings, two awards (and a group win in the artists’ games) and a whole lotta great memories. Those marked ‘available’ can be purchased through Sedona Arts Center by calling 866.282.3809 or emailing sac@sedonaartscenter.org. Without further ado, here they are:

Hammerhead cumulonimbus cloud over Posse Grounds Park, 9X12, oil on canvasboard, available through Sedona Arts Center.
Cliffs, 12X12, oil on birch, private collection.
Sunlight and shadows, oil on birch, 14X18, private collection. Winner, Best Abstract.
Sycamore and sunlight, 14X18, oil on canvasboard, available through Sedona Arts Center. Honorable Mention.
Along Boynton Canyon Road, 9X12, oil on birch, available through Sedona Arts Center.
Lone pines, 14X18, oil on birch, available through Sedona Arts Center.
Overlooking the Verde Valley, 14X18, oil on canvasboard, available through Sedona Arts Center.
Crepuscular rays along Forest Road 525, 8X16, oil on archival linenboard, available through Sedona Arts Center.

My partners for the Artists’ Games were Ellie Wilson, Barbara Mulleneaux and Olena Babak. We had one hour to work together to create a painting, our prompt was ‘pumpkins’ and we were told to be subtle. “Subtle” was, obviously, our métier.

Pumpkins, Ellie Wilson, Barbara Mulleneaux, Olena Babak and Carol Douglas. Artists’ games winner.

Needless to say, we won.

When I get back to Maine, I’ll unpack the three additional paintings I did in the Grand Canyon. If they survived the trip, I’ll show you on Friday.

  1. Congrats on the WINS and awards! Absolutely gorgeous and amazing that they are all plein air! (Love the pumpkin balloons!)

And looking at these, I learned a few things about AZ light, brush and cacti looking at your paintings. Practice fast complimentary accidental color contrast. It’s not an easy feat for me!

  2. Love the work you did and the pumpkins! I took my first trip to Sedona this past spring to take a class with Anton Nowel. Just a great guy.. I’ll take a look at the March class!

  3. Congrats on your wins! Love the subtle pumpkins!! 🙂 Also like the Lone Pines!!

Your paintings are increasing my longing for Sedona. Wondering where you suggest to paint in the Grand Canyon, and where to stay? Ever stayed at the Grand Canyon lodge? Or do you drive up from Sedona each day? I rafted and camped there on the river for 6 weeks after college. (A half price trip cause we paddled, rowed and cooked!!) Have wanted to get back since. Especially now that I am painting!

    1. I camped outdoors, under the stars, because that’s my preference. I know there are accommodations within the park; I’d recommend that for painting because you can get first and last light easily.

      1. My preference too!! Just parking and laying down a sleeping bag or at a campground? Two times i did that – once in Yosemite woken by a ranger.

Another time in Arches heading out on my third 2 week backcountry trip in Canyonlands, when we stopped at Arches late at night and searched in vain for the campgrounds then gave up and lay out bags – woken by camera toting tourists near dawn in their 2 min hike up a trail to photo and back to rv. They stopped to brag about “seeing” three parks already that morning!!!

  4. Congratulations Carol! These tweaked memories of how much I loved just being in nature and painting. Beautifully done. And the subtle pumpkins made me laugh.
